City of Phoenix Water Services Department Enterprise Application Integration (EAI)

COP WSD delivers water to its customers through a network of more than 5,000 miles of water mains by utilizing more than 200 remote stations such as booster stations, wells, and reservoirs.

A complex mix of inherently decentralized IT systems is used to perform day to day operations such as process control, GIS, Asset Inventory, and work management.  These disparate systems limit any comprehensive real-time view of information.  This resulted in system reconciliation and data integrity issues - not to mention the expense of information reentry across the systems.  Solving this dilemma streamlines operations and provides consolidated information that accurately reflects the current state of business. 

The solution involved developing the following features and implementing the design in a phased approach:

• Custom Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) / EAI layer utilizing various open industry standards; e.g., Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Extensible Markup Language (XML).  The EAI layer was implemented in November of 2004.

• Web based GIS front end was developed using ArcIMS.
• Seamless integration of SCADA, GIS and SYNERGEN data using the EAI.
• Comprehensive view of SCADA and Work Order information for each of the remote stations and pressure / elevation zones.
• Currently working with integration of SAP, HANSEN and SYNERGEN systems.
