Spatial information for infrastructure such as water pipes, streets and highways is stored and maintained by organizations utilizing commercial off the shelf software from companies such as ESRI, Autodesk, and Intergraph. Typical implementations separate geographical information from the operational information such as asset maintenance history, process control data, and automobile crashes.

Integrating GIS data with the operational data (i.e. spatially enabling) allows organizations to gain access to vast amounts of operational data using a user-friendly GIS based GUI.

These applications are developed in support of operations such as transportation planning, work order management, water and wastewater process control operations, and environmental compliance.
